Maker Challenge Teacher Guide (an additional resource for teachers who would like their class to participate)
The REMC Association of Michigan has a collection of STEM-themed storybooks to help engage students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Steve Kass from REMC1 and Emily Gochis from the Western UP MiSTEM Network have teamed up to help deliver this project remotely for the students of the Western UP. With assistance from colleagues around the state, read-aloud recordings of these books along with maker challenges have been created.

General Education Elementary Learning at a Distance Opportunities
Local elementary teachers are working together to create supports for virtual learning opportunities. Many teachers are using classroom materials to continue students’ learning progressions. The collection offers opportunities in multiple areas, including Heggerty Phonemic Awareness videos, links to read alouds, math games, art explorations, and music. There are links for families and teachers within this folder.
This collection will continue to grow, so check back often.

Outdoor Field Explorations
Outdoor field explorations are a meaningful way to engage learners by simply observing the natural phenomena in one’s own backyard. To support teachers and families in maintaining this vital learning experience during these uncertain times we are developing a series of field explorations that will engage learners through recorded videos and recommended outdoor activities. These bi-weekly virtual place-based field trips will focus on local spring-themed content such as bird migration, frog life-cycles, planting gardens, and local geology.

This is a joint project between the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, a collaboration between the Western UP MiSTEM Network, MTU’s Center for Science & Environmental Outreach and regional schools.
