Individuals in Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties
who are interested in serving as substitute teachers
should register with the Copper Country ISD. The ISD
conducts all necessary background checks on the
applicants, applies for permits for applicants as
needed, and provides a list of eligible substitute
teachers to all of its constituent districts in the
three-county area. The list is also shared with the BHK
Child Development Board and the Keweenaw Bay Tribal
Center. This information is updated on a regular basis.
All public school districts in the area, except for
Arvon, Elm River and Grant, currently have a contract
with Good Marks for Schools (GMS) for the provision of
sub teacher services. In addition to registration with the ISD,
applicants who wish to sub in the participating
districts also need to sign a contract with GMS and fill
out applicable paperwork to become employees of the
company. See the FAQ below for further information.
Application packets can be downloaded below or picked up
from Peggy Myllyoja, Executive Secretary to the
Superintendent, at the Copper Country ISD Service
Center, 809 Hecla Street, Hancock, Michigan, between the
hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
You may also contact Peggy at (906)482-4250,
(800)562-7618, or
peggym@copperisd.org to request a packet in the
mail, or if you have questions.
Substitute teacher applicants are responsible for all
fees related to their application, which will include
the cost of having their fingerprints taken, the cost of
the required criminal history records checks performed
on their fingerprints, and the annual substitute teacher
permit fee, if necessary. For additional details
concerning these costs, please refer to your application
packet or download the FAQ file below (PDF format):
