Adult Enrichment Opportunities
 

The Career and Technical Education Center also serves the adult population of the area.  Selected classes are offered for adults who wish to learn new skills to improve their employability and/or simply wish to broaden their educational horizons.

 

Classes that may be offered in the evening for adult enrollment include Information Technology, Construction Technology, Nursing Assistant, Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification, Automotive Technology, and Residential Electricity.  All of the above classes except Nursing Assistant take place at the Career and Technical Education Center located at 110 E. Quincy Street in Hancock.  The Nursing Assistant class is housed in the Houghton County Medical Care Facility at 1100 Quincy Street in Hancock.

Computers for Beginners
The Copper Country Intermediate School District is offering an adult enrichment opportunity for those adults who have little or no background in operating computers. This class will meet once a week for five consecutive weeks, and will cover the following topics:

  • Basic operations of computer hardware

  • Basic operations of Windows XP

  • Introductory to word processing

  • World Wide Web for beginners

  • Introduction to e-mail

  • Operating a digital camera

Computers for the Intermediate User
The Copper Country Intermediate School District is offering an adult enrichment opportunity for those adults who have some experience in operating computers but would like to learn more. This class will meet once a week for five consecutive weeks, and will cover the following topics:

 

  • Windows XP

  • Updating your computer

  • How to load software applications

  • Downloads

  • Protecting your PC, including how to apply and effectively use Antivirus and

  • Spyware software

  • Working with photos/digital cameras

    • Inserting photos into documents

    • Emailing photos

    • Resizing photos

    • How to retrieve photos from your digital camera

  • Working with email

    • Attachments

    • Email etiquette

    • "Spam"

  • Managing files/folders

Basics of Computer Security for the Home User
The Copper Country Intermediate School District is offering an adult enrichment opportunity for those adults who would like to learn about computer security for home computers. The class will meet once a week for five consecutive weeks, and will cover the following topics:

  • Learn how to keep your computer secure

  • Windows and Windows Updates

  • User levels and how to keep your computer up-to-date

  • Anti-virus programs

  • Where to purchase/download them and how to use them effectively

  • Anti-Spyware software

  • Where to purchase/download them and how to use them effectively

  • Email security

  • How to configure your email program, attachments, etc.

  • The Web

  • Configuring your Web browser and basic online security

  • Wireless security

  • Firewalls

Excel (Spreadsheets) for Beginners
A spreadsheet program is an accounting or bookkeeping program that displays data in rows and columns on a screen. A simple example of a useful spreadsheet application is one that calculates mortgage payments for a house.

The Copper Country Intermediate School District is offering an adult enrichment opportunity for those adults who have little or no background creating and using spreadsheets. This class will meet once a week for five consecutive weeks, and will cover the following topics:

  • The Excel screen

  • Creating a workbook

  • Entering & editing data

  • Formatting worksheets

  • Entering formulas/functions

  • Inserting graphics

  • Creating a chart

  • Saving & printing an Excel spreadsheet

Residential Construction for Beginners
The Copper Country Intermediate School District is offering an adult enrichment opportunity for those adults who would like to expand their knowledge in the area of residential rough carpentry. This class is designed for the student who has little or no background in the area of home construction. The class will meet twice a week for four consecutive weeks and will cover the following topics.

  • Safety

  • Identification and proper use of hand and power tools

  • Identification of building materials

  • Rough framing of floors, walls, doors, windows, and roofs

  • Hanging exterior doors and windows

  • Installation of roofing, fascia, and soffit

  • Installation of vinyl siding

Adult Nurse Aide Class
The Adult Nurse Aide class provides training for students to obtain the skills necessary to take the state of Michigan's competency evaluation exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Upon successful completion of the exam, students will have their name placed on the state registry and will be eligible to work as a nursing assistant in hospitals, nursing homes and with health care agencies. This 120-hour course is a combination of theory (80 hours) and clinical instruction (40 hours), and covers the following topics:

  • Understanding the process of becoming a CNA

  • Professionalism and confidentiality

  • Losses promoting independence

  • Emergency preparedness

  • Safety, including gait belts and transferring and moving patients safely

  • Heimlich maneuver

  • Personal cares: toileting, changing a Depends, B&B training, care of the incontinent resident, bedpan and urinal

  • Nutrition and feeding a resident

  • Dysphagia, fluid balance, I&O, FAS, measuring intake and output

  • Nursing math, metric system and military time

  • Alzheimer's, including dementia

  • Dealing with difficult behaviors

  • Vital Signs: TPR and BP, ht. and wt.

  • Rehab care including ROM, colostomy care, catheter care, care of the resident with oxygen

  • Special skin care and use of special mattresses
